SCLS Global was first brought together around Syria, at a moment when legal, institutional, policy, and strategic questions required a more integrated response. That initial impulse, driven by one partner who knew each of us separately, and who had the determination to build something serious and credible in that context, created the conditions for a different kind of conversation. What emerged was something none of us had planned: the recognition that our careers, taken together, covered precisely the ground our clients most needed. One of us had spent years building institutional foundations in Syria itself, working across infrastructure, energy, and real estate, developing the relational depth and local knowledge that effective advisory in complex environments demands. One had built a practice as a Damascus-based lawyer navigating the full range of Syrian corporate, regulatory, and transactional law, combining courtroom and transactional experience in a way uncommon even in that market. One had spent decades moving between international human rights law, governance reform, academic work, and advocacy across the MENA region and in the United States, advising governments, co-founding institutions, and playing a central role in Syrian institutional reform. And one spent decades working at the institutional level in international trade, export control, and technology transfer; international development, business development, and risk management across multiple geographies as well as structuring investment mechanisms in different markets. Each of us had encountered the same pattern from a different angle: clients receiving advice that was sound within its lane but unable to connect the legal exposure to the governance gap, or the compliance requirement to the operational constraint. Nobody was holding the whole picture. SCLS Global was built to hold it. We also each brought networks, not contacts lists, but working relationships built through years of serious engagement. Senior attorneys, former regulators, governance practitioners, compliance specialists, and sector experts across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. When we came together, those networks came with us, extending the advisory well beyond what four people could cover directly. What became clear as the firm took shape was that the discipline developed in Syria, the rigour demanded by one of the world's most complex operating environments, was entirely transferable. A governance framework that held under those conditions could hold anywhere. The geography expanded not by design, but because the quality of the work made it possible. Building the firm also meant being our own first client. Establishing SCLS Global required exactly what we advise others to do: deliberate choices about institutional structure, jurisdictional positioning, governance design, and how to build credibility across multiple contexts at once. We held ourselves to the same standard, because we knew better than most what the cost of getting it wrong looks like. Construire le cabinet signifiait aussi être notre propre premier client. Créer SCLS Global exigeait exactement ce que nous conseillons aux autres : des choix délibérés en matière de structure institutionnelle et de positionnement juridictionnel. What unites the experience of its partners is a shared standard of seriousness, discretion, and context-based judgment. The way the firm came together remains central to its identity: grounded in real work, shaped by trust built through practice.
